The 20th century saw a race among excavators to discover Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Several discoveries were made that first seemed to be related to Tutankhamun’s tomb, but were just false alarms. But finally, in 1903, an automobile accident happened, which eventually led to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Howard Carter's description upon opening the tomb in 1922 was, "At first I could see nothing, the hot air escaping from the chamber causing the candle flames to flicker, but presently, as my eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room within emerged slowly from Tutankhamun’s Tomb. The tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered on November 26, 1922, in the Valley of the Kings, when a workman unexpectedly uncovered some stairs leading down into the ground. When the debris in the stairwell was removed and the sealed door breached, the magnificent tomb of Tutankhamun was revealed. Tutankhamun’s small tomb, KV 62, has certainly provided us with fabulous treasures, which give us an idea of the probable splendour of the burial furniture that has been lost or pillaged from the tombs of the great pharaohs of the New Empire, such as Touthmosis III, Amenhotep III, and Ramses II. It led to the tomb of king Tutankhamun (1332 – 1323 BC). Inside were fabulous treasures and the golden sarcophagus containing the king’s mummified remains.
